Is there such a thing as being too fat to be fit? The latest headlines would certainly have you believing that this is the case but as a fat woman I’m not necessarily convinced that this is true. I don’t think fitness has anything to do with size personally. I know that stereotypes would place the obese as being really unfit and unhealthy but I can honestly say I know just as many thin people who are unhealthy and unfit.
What is fitness defined as?
Fitness is a difficult word to define. It means different things to different people. Generally though most people would agree that it is about how healthy you are, and how this affects your ability to perform certain physical tasks. I find this quite a subjective definition though. Are you fit if you can just about manage a task but with some difficulty? You’ve still completed it. Or do you need to be able to complete a task easily with little difficulty to be considered fit?
Can you be too fat to be fit?
My personal opinion on this is that no you can’t be too fat to be fit. I won’t deny that the health risks of obesity may still exist but I think being fat does not exclude you from being physically fit as well. I can run up the stairs without getting out of breath, and I take a size 22 clothes. My sister takes a size 12 and struggles. Who is fitter?
