Being a fat runner

I’m fat. There’s no point denying it. I weight over 20 stone and I take a size 24 clothes. That officially makes me fat! Does it mean that I can’t be a runner? Does it make me any less of a runner? No, it doesn’t. It just makes me a fat runner. As far as I am concerned a runner is anybody who gets out there and runs. I do that therefore I am a runner.

Being fat, and running isn’t easy. I obviously have a lot more of me to carry around, and therefore I am slow. I mean tortoise speed slow. I know that I am unlikely to get below 40 minutes on a 5k any time soon. And do you know what? I am ok with that. The distance is the same whether It’s completed in 20 minutes or whether it takes an hour to do it.

People always seem to be far more judgemental when they see a fat runner. I’ve been heckled more times than I would like to admit to. It can be quite demotivating when young hear people say horrible things as you run. I have been called a whale, fat b***h, walrus and a whole lot more. Generally though the people heckling me are in their cars. I can honestly say that I have never been given anything but support and encouragement by other runners. I think they appreciate that no matter your size running is difficult and they appreciate the effort being made.
